When it comes to finding the best shaving creams for sensitive skin, the key is all about comfort, hydration, and protection—that goes whether you’re shaving your underarms or tackling your bikini line. These formulas are specially designed to calm irritation, prevent razor burn, and leave skin silky-smooth without the harsh additives found in traditional shaving creams (think menthol, sulfates, or artificial fragrance) that can cause redness and dryness. Many of our top picks feature skin-soothing ingredients like aloe vera, colloidal oatmeal, shea butter, and glycerin to hydrate and strengthen the skin barrier, while allowing your razor to glide effortlessly.

Whether you prefer a rich cream, a light oil, or a whipped texture, these sensitive-skin-safe formulas deliver the kind of shave that feels more like a skin-care ritual than a hair-removal routine. Say goodbye to bumps, nicks, and post-shave sting with our editor- and dermatologist-approved picks below.

    Our Top Picks

Best Shave Cream: Fur Shave Cream

Fur Shave Cream in branded tube component on a light gray background

    Fur

    Shave Cream

    $34

    Ulta Beauty

Why it's worth it: Fur makes once-taboo grooming topics—like caring for body hair beyond the face and legs—feel refreshingly normal. Their Shave Cream embodies that mission with a gentle, full-body formula designed for wherever you want it, from the pubic area (it’s gynecologist-tested) to armpits and beyond. Combining marshmallow root extract with aloe and olive oil, this ultra-creamy product “cuts down on ingrown hairs and irritation while leaving the skin feeling soft and pampered,” says Peterson Pierre, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Thousand Oaks, California. Unlike typical foaming formulas that can strip and irritate, this non-lathering cream cushions skin for a close, comfortable shave—thanks to soothing bisabolol and allantoin, which help calm inflammation and support barrier repair.

Tester feedback from senior commerce editor Sarah Felbin

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

“My super-sensitive skin doesn't love it when I shave—unless I use Fur's Shave Cream. It's thick and smooth (almost fluffy) and goes on in one sheer white layer that makes it easy to see every stroke. After I rinse it off, my skin is left feeling ultra-soft, with no irritation in sight. I'll admit, I didn't see shaving cream as a necessity until I tried this one—now, I'm not sure how I'll shower without it. I just wish the tube was bigger!” —Sarah Felbin, commerce editor

Best Shave Oil: Skintimate Skin Therapy Sensitive Moisturizing Shave Gel

    Skintimate

Skin Therapy Sensitive Moisturizing Shave Gel

    $12

    Amazon (3-Pack)

    $4

    Walmart

Why it's worth it: While it’s not a cream format, Skintimate 2-in-1 Shave Oil & Moisturizer more than earns its spot on our list, especially since this 2025 Best of Beauty Award winner pulls double duty as a moisturizer. The silky oil-serum hybrid gives your razor the perfect glide for a close, nick-free shave, and also keeps skin hydrated for up to 24 hours. Packed with aloe vera, vitamin E, and a blend of shea, sweet almond, and jojoba oils, it soothes, softens, and leaves skin glowing. Plus, it’s fragrance-free, dermatologist-tested, and gentle enough for the delicate bikini area.

Tester feedback from senior news editor Nicola Dall’Asen

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

“Shaving and I have been mortal enemies for most of my life, but this product might finally be bridging the gap between us. With a texture that's kind of like an oil-jelly combo, it spreads over skin without any effort and creates a slippery layer that helps my razor glide like a hot knife through butter. I swear, when I use this stuff, it's like my leg hair is melting away rather than being cut off at the surface; after going through two bottles, I have yet to experience any irritation, ingrown hairs, or even skin dryness, and my legs are smoother than a baby seal's butt. That even goes for my bikini line and inner thighs, which are notoriously fickle and prone to red bumps.” —Nicola Dall’Asen, senior news editor

    $26

    Nordstrom

Why it's worth it: You’ll find Kiehl’s Ultimate Brushless Shave Cream Blue Eagle hanging out in the brand’s men’s shaving cream section, but anyone can use it. (Think of it as the calmer, gentler sibling to the menthol-packed White Eagle.) This version skips the cooling tingle and focuses on keeping skin happy, especially if you’re prone to irritation. It’s packed with aloe vera to soothe, sesame oil to soften, and sodium PCA (a moisture magnet naturally found in your skin) to keep everything hydrated and smooth. The creamy, buttery texture makes shaving super easy, leaving your skin pampered and nourished.

Tester feedback from contributing commerce writer Christa Joanna Lee

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

“I actually stole this from my husband’s stash years ago—and never gave it back. The texture is incredibly creamy, and a little goes a long way. My sensitive skin has never once reacted to it; instead, it feels like the formula hugs each hair so my razor glides effortlessly without needing multiple passes.” —Christa Joanna Lee, contributing commerce writer

Best Shave Gel: Aveeno Therapeutic Shave Gel

Aveeno Therapeutic Shave Gel in branded component on a light gray background

    Aveeno

    Therapeutic Shave Gel

    $4

    Amazon

    $4

    Walmart

Why it's worth it: Aveeno has built its reputation on the power of oats, using colloidal oatmeal in nearly all of its products to calm, hydrate, and protect sensitive skin. That same skin-soothing philosophy is what makes Aveeno Therapeutic Shave Gel such a classic. “This is a great option because it is both fragrance- and dye-free and has hydrating glycerin for a smooth shave. In addition, its vitamin E and vitamin B5 can help comfort skin and support a healthy skin barrier,” says Peter Bittar, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Miami. With a boost of aloe vera and allantoin to comfort and soften, this creamy formula builds to a nice lather yet still keeps skin irritation-free during every shave.

Tester feedback from associate manager of audience development Melanie Curry

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

“I never know how my body will react to products (thank you, contact dermatitis), so I'm hesitant to try anything new. But I picked up this shave gel for its “sensitive-skin” branding, and I'm so glad I did. It’s so foamy and thick that my razor glides easily without any nicks or irritation, leaving me with a baby-smooth shave. The formula also has vitamin E and aloe, so your skin isn’t thirsty for hydration. You’ll still need a post-shave oil, of course, but stripping is no more after shaving with this bb.” —Melanie Curry, associate manager of audience development

    EOS

    24 Hour Moisture Shave Cream

    $10 $8 (20% off)

    Amazon (2-Pack)

    $4

    Walmart

Why it's worth it: Most shaving creams need water to work up a little lather, but if bubbly sulfates irritate your sensitive skin, try eos 24 Hour Moisture Shave Cream. This rich, non-foaming formula is designed for wet or dry use, so you can get a smooth, close shave whenever (and wherever) you need it. True to its name, it delivers up to 24 hours of moisture, leaving skin hydrated long after you rinse. A blend of shea butter and shea oil deeply nourishes and strengthens the skin barrier, while aloe vera and colloidal oatmeal calm irritation and reduce redness. Glycerin helps soften hair for a more effortless glide, and sunflower seed oil leaves skin silky, soothed, and glowing. Plus, the warm vanilla scent reminds us of dessert in the best way.

Tester feedback from content director Kara McGrath

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

“This is everything I want in a shaving cream: It's thick and creamy, but spreads evenly. It doesn't foam up too much, but it creates a light, visible layer so I can see which parts I've shaved and which parts I've missed. It has shea butter that helps my razor glide in the shower and leaves my skin feeling moisturized once I'm out. I especially appreciate the lotion pump top, which I find to be easier to use when your hands are wet and slippery than the dispensers you'd find on a foaming cream.” —Kara McGrath, content director

    Le Labo

    Shaving Cream

Why it's worth it: Rather than simply repurposing one of its signature fragrances into a cream, Le Labo Shaving Cream feels like a thoughtful extension of the brand’s whole vibe—elevated, understated, and quietly luxurious. If your sensitive skin type can handle scents, “this rich formula has a distinctive natural fragrance and combines ingredients like chamomile and coconut to moisturize and soothe the skin while minimizing irritation,” says Dr. Pierre. The non-foaming texture lets your razor glide effortlessly, leaving skin soft, calm, and lightly scented—turning an otherwise mundane shaving routine into a little moment of indulgence.

Why it's worth it: If Vanicream were in the dictionary, its definition would simply read: sensitive. Known for its ultra-gentle, dermatologist-developed formulas, the brand has built a following among those who can’t tolerate much else. “When it comes to sensitive skin, Vanicream is one of the best in the business. Almost all their products are formulated to be as hypoallergenic and gentle as possible,” says Dr. Bittar. The Vanicream Shave Cream is no exception: It’s free of fragrances, dyes, parabens, formaldehyde releasers, and lanolin that can trigger sensitive skin. Instead, it relies on glycerin, panthenol, and caprylic/capric triglyceride to hydrate and protect while helping the razor glide smoothly so even the most delicate skin types feel unbothered.

Billie’s Whipped Shave Cream delivers that same no-nonsense approach to affordability and quality, proving a luxurious shave doesn’t have to come with a luxury price tag. This fragrance-free version is perfect for sensitive skin, featuring allantoin to help prevent irritation, coconut oil and shea butter for deep, lasting moisture, and aloe to soothe and calm. The whipped texture cushions skin beautifully so your razor glides like a dream. Want options? Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best razor to use with sensitive skin?

If you have sensitive skin, a weighted razor like Hanni’s The Weighted Razor is your best bet. Made entirely of metal, it provides a close shave without the need for harsh pressure or repeated passes, helping to minimize irritation and razor burn. The extra-long handle and finger grooves make it easy to control, even over tricky areas. As California-based board-certified dermatologist Azadeh Shirazi, MD, previously told Allure, the ergonomic design “can make holding the razor more comfortable and allow for better control when maneuvering over the skin.” Plus, the unique design (a single razor blade) exfoliates dead skin while you shave.

How can I prevent shaving irritation?

To prevent irritation from shaving, take your time and prep your skin properly. Start by applying a moisturizing shaving cream from our handy guide to create a protective barrier between your skin and the razor. This helps “avoid nicks, cuts, bumps, and ingrown hairs, which can all be caused by things like dry shaving, shaving too fast, failure to moisturize, and shaving against the direction of your hair growth,” Dr. Shirazi previously said. Afterward, rinse with cool water and apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to keep skin calm and hydrated.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that's included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best shaving creams for sensitive skin, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team of in-house writers and editors, as well as contributors, along with special consideration from dermatologists. To learn more about our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from are folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

Why it’s worth it: Even if you swear you’re not a body oil person, Osea’s Undaria Algae Body Oil might change your mind. (And if you already are, meet your new obsession.) The star ingredient, undaria seaweed, is packed with antioxidants and essential minerals that replenish the skin’s moisture barrier and boost overall texture. It’s blended with white lupin flower extract to support firmness and elasticity, plus passionfruit oil for deep, non-comedogenic hydration. The formula melts instantly, leaving skin silky and radiant. And, a single pump goes a long way, with the fresh, citrusy scent (think grapefruit, lime, and mango mandarin) lingering just enough to make you feel like you’re on vacay.

“I'm not a diehard body-oil user, but when I'm pregnant, it becomes a must-have. I've been slathering this stuff on my belly, and it's just as good as everyone says. It's rich and viscous in a way that's satisfying—unlike, say, a dry oil—but sinks in so fast that it has yet to stain any of my clothes. And the scent is a little fruity, a little herbal, but all-around uplifting, making it perfect for slathering on before I start my day.” —Deanna Pai, contributing commerce editor

Why it’s worth it: Radiate like the sun by slathering on Tom Ford’s Soleil Blanc Shimmering Body Oil. It’s one of the few shimmery body oils that actually stay put on our skin and not on our clothes (hence its previous Best of Beauty Award win), no matter how many layers of its glitter-speckled formula we apply. On top of its luminous finish, this body oil will prolong your glow with its conditioning mix of jojoba seed oil and triglycerides. Just like the fragrance that inspired this body oil, it features a beachy blend of warm, solar notes like ylang-ylang and pistachio.

Why it’s worth it: Chanel’s Chance Eau Tendre Body Oil feels even more luxurious than the label’s eau de parfums, which is to say its sunflower seed oil-based composition leaves skin feeling incredibly soft all day long. Just like the original fragrance it’s based on, this 2025 Best of Beauty Award winner features florals like jasmine and rose, balanced with a musky base, as well as an easy-to-use spray dispenser that lessens the overall mess. If you’re interested in more than just florals, Chanel has more scented body oils to choose from, all of which are inspired by the brand’s fragrances (hi, No. 5).

The scent is fresh, floral, and elegant, with added skin hydration as a plus!” —Lexi Herrick, senior director of audience development

Why it’s worth it: Phlur’s Missing Person EDP may get most of the love, but the accompanying Body Oil is a real hidden gem. It wraps skin in the same addictive, just-showered scent with a boost of all-day hydration, thanks to ceramide-rich floral oils, skin-mimicking lipids, and vitamin C oil for a subtle, radiant glow. Laced with comforting notes of skin musk, sheer jasmine, neroli, and orange blossom, the soft, peachy-pink oil feels like—and smells like—bottled nostalgia.

“I’m almost out of my Missing Person perfume, so I’ve been rationing my sprays and reaching for the body oil instead. Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I use a body oil?

Like your favorite body lotion, an oil can provide the nourishment your skin needs to look and feel its best. Michele Green, MD, a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist, tells Allure that oils differ from lotions for their lighter, more weightless feel on the skin. "Many people might assume that using body oil would do the opposite and cause the skin to feel greasy, but body oils tend to be fast-absorbing," she says. Dr. Green also notes that body oils usually have gentle formulations but, considering we’re talking about scented body oils, sensitive skin types should still proceed with all of the above options with caution, as fragrances are known skin irritants.

How should I use body oil?

Slather body oil anywhere below the neck where you want more skin-plumping moisture (minus your intimate areas, of course). They can be used alone as your sole body moisturizer post-shower, but if you have particularly dry skin, or want to target skin concerns like body acne or crepey skin, apply a body serum beforehand that’s formulated to treat your concerns, whether that be an exfoliating pick or something that provides an extra helping of moisturizing ingredients.

As for fragranced body oils, if you want to play around and create a signature scent that’s truly unique to you, we recommend layering your body oil with your other fragranced body-care products and/or perfumes. Not only will this make your scent more bespoke, but layering also makes your scent last longer.

For our list of the best scented body oils, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

Normally, I wouldn't question the beauty practices of one of the most beautiful women in the world. I mean, sure, I'm a beauty editor. I know a thing or two about skin and makeup and stuff, but if a perpetually radiant, age-defying icon like Jennifer Lopez is incorporating something into her routine, who am I to doubt its effectiveness? But here's the thing: I just saw J.Lo wearing undereye patches over her makeup, and I'm just not sure I can get onboard.

Lopez shared a video to Instagram on Thursday, October 23, writing in the caption, “Where you’ll find me in between takes on set … 👀”—and that's apparently lounging in the corner of a lakeview bedroom on a very cute, fuzzy chair and ottoman combo. She's wearing pleated, beige slacks, a striped button-down shirt, and a full face of gorgeous makeup (she is on set, after all). But that's not all.

Atop her makeup, the Kiss of the Spider Woman star is wearing rose gold undereye patches. ATOP?! This made me stop scrolling in my tracks. So many questions! Why? How? Seriously? Have I been doing this all wrong?

    Instagram content

If you're anything like me (heaven help you), you use undereye patches when your face is freshly cleansed or, at the very least, not topped with concealer and foundation. The thought of one of those saturated, gooey mini masks over my makeup gives me such an ick. Perhaps hydrogel patches (the ones that aren't soaked in slimy serum) wouldn't disrupt makeup as much, but it still leaves me wondering if that makeup is a big ol' barrier between the benefits of the patches and the dry, puffy skin you're trying to treat.

So, of course, I asked a dermatologist. “The ideal scenario is obviously makeup-free to get maximum results, but you are still getting some benefit,” board-certified dermatologist Mona Gohara, MD, tells Allure. “I think in the instance of J.Lo, it's just icing on the pretty darn perfect cake.” No lies detected. It's nice to know the goodness is still getting through, though I imagine her makeup artist will be called in for touchups before cameras start rolling again.

I happen to have it on good authority that JLo Beauty is launching hydrogel eye masks next week. Extraordinary coincidence? Who's to say? Rumor has it that the directions indicate to use them on clean, dry skin, but if there's one thing we know about Jennifer Lopez, she breaks the rules.

Also, when your name is on the jar, you can do whatever the hell you want with your undereye patches.

Happy birthday, Kim Kardashian! The Skims founder celebrated her birthday on the red carpet in Paris for the premiere of her forthcoming legal drama, All's Fair, and in true Kim K fashion, she went full glam in a gorgeous vintage Dior gown, earful of diamonds, and the coolest chignon we've seen in awhile.

For the event, Kardashian and hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos opted for a classic chignon… with a twist. Instead of a simple twist or bun at the nape of her neck with nary a hair out of place, Kardashian's updo with a little something extra. Her hair was pulled tightly back from her face and slicked down for a glossy, sleek foundation, then gathered at the crown and wrapped into a structural knot. But unlike a traditional chignon, where all pieces of hair are perfectly, pristinely wrapped and tucked in, Giannetos pulled out two small portions of hair from the knot, one on either side, and styled them super-straight and subtly curved under to add a modern, structural edge.

    Instagram content

“Kim wore this beautiful Dior dress designed by John Galliano, so I wanted to keep her hair in the runway-inspired world,” Giannetos tells Allure of the inspiration behind the “sculptural, modern, and fresh” red carpet style. “Kim is definitely a person who can break boundaries and try new things, so I did this ‘J’adore le chignon,' which is a very classic, elegant updo in the most fashion-forward way.”

Kardashian has long loved a tight bun and sleek style, but she's always changing up her look, so we never know what to expect from a Kardashian red carpet apperaance. As attorney Allura Grant in the Ryan Murphy show, she wears her hair in a short, all-business flippy bob—a bob we got a sneak peek at last year. If you're craving something on the other end of the updo spectrum, maybe Jennifer Lawrence's messy French twist is more your speed? Holiday party season is just around the corner, after all, so it's good to have options!

Gray hair is a beautiful, stylish part of aging, but that doesn't mean you can't benefit from one of the best gray hair treatments. First, a quick disclaimer: As much as some might wish it true, nothing will make grays disappear completely or hold them off forever. However, there are formulas that can slow premature graying (emphasis on “premature”—and no judgment if you're not ready to embrace silver hair just yet), while others can boost the vibrancy and softness of your gray-on-purpose vibe.

Or, if it’s not the grays themselves but the brittleness, dullness, frizz, or thinning that often accompanies them, one of these expert-approved serums, masks, or shampoos could be just what your hair needs. Scroll on for advice from dermatologists and hair experts, plus our picks for the best products for gray hair on the market.

Why it's worth it: Arey’s To The Root Serum tackles aging hair at the source—your scalp—by combining a topical approach with internal support, which “makes sense when you consider how complex the graying process is,” says Omer Ibrahim, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Chicago. At the core of the formula is Mela-9, Arey’s proprietary blend of antioxidants, peptides, and plant extracts. “From a derm perspective, there’s emerging research around certain peptides like Mela-9 and ingredients like acetyl tyrosine potentially supporting melanin production,” says Dr. Ibrahim. “But we’re still early in terms of definitive proof.”

Meanwhile, ingredients like caffeine, ginseng, and biotin are “more about scalp health and hair quality, not really pigment,” he adds. For best results, Arey recommends starting early; it’s most effective on those with up to 30% gray hair. A handy chart on the product page, can help you assess where you stand.

How the brand tested this product’s efficacy

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

Arey’s To the Root serum was clinically tested specifically as part of The System, a two-part approach that combines the topical serum with the brand’s Not Today, Grey supplement to target gray hair from both the inside and outside. In the largest and only randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study on the appearance of gray hair, 88% of participants using The System experienced reduced gray hair growth over six months. On average, the active group had 13% fewer gray hairs, while the placebo group experienced a 10% increase. Users also experienced thicker, shinier, fuller-looking hair, three times more than those using a placebo.

The results are promising: “A 13% reduction in gray hairs won’t turn back the clock overnight, but it’s notable,” says Dr. Ibrahim, adding that he sees the product as one that “helps slow progression and possibly reactivates pigment in early-stage grays rather than full-on repigmentation across the board."

Why it's worth it: If you’ve noticed your grays becoming coarser or more wiry with time, Nécessaire The Scalp Serum helps bring some softness and supports hair growth while it’s at it. This nourishing, lightweight treatment features Capixyl, a peptide and red clover extract blend that, in some small-scale studies, has been shown to deliver results similar to minoxidil in promoting hair growth. “Capixyl helps reduce inflammation and shedding while stimulating hair proliferation,” says Omer Ibrahim, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Chicago. This can be especially beneficial for aging scalps where thinning and texture changes are more common. The formula also features niacinamide, which offers antioxidant protection and helps reduce shedding—ideal if your grays are accompanied by hair loss. Bonus: It’s gentle enough for sensitive skin and is recognized by the National Eczema Association.

Tester feedback from content director Kara McGrath

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

“Working it into my hair-care routine was easy. The formula goes on super wet and dries really quickly. It played well with my other products—leave-in conditioners, curl creams, dry shampoo, too. I applied it to wet hair on washdays and dry hair the rest of the week. It didn’t leave a trace in either situation. Other than sticking to the recommended “half pipette” amount of product, my application technique was fairly haphazard. I would part my hair with my fingers and use the dropper to apply the serum directly to my scalp in different sections, then massage it in. I started seeing results pretty quickly. After about a month, my hair was already looking much shinier and bouncier, if not exponentially thicker.” —Kara McGrath, content director

Specifically designed for white, gray, and silver strands, this ultra-luxe formula enhances vibrancy, restores softness, and protects against breakage caused by environmental stressors with a blend of antioxidant-rich lychee, watermelon, and edelweiss flower extracts. “I’m obsessed with this shampoo for my clients with gray or silver hair,” says Sean Michael, a hairstylist in Andover, Massachusetts. “It brightens those tones instantly and keeps brassiness at bay without feeling harsh.” He adds that it brings back a “clean, luminous shine” to dull or yellowing grays while softening and strengthening strands that are often coarser and more fragile with age. And yes, it smells just as incredible as you'd expect from Oribe: sophisticated, indulgent, and addictive. Get the full treatment by pairing the shampoo with the Oribe Silverati Conditioner.

Why it’s worth it: Alfaparf Milano Semi Di Lino Moisture Nutritive Mask is a rich, deeply hydrating treatment that helps bring dry, brittle strands—especially gray hair—back to life. “Gray hair tends to feel dry or wiry, and this mask softens the texture, boosts shine, and makes it way more manageable,” says Michael. Since gray hair is often drier and more porous due to reduced scalp oils, it craves moisture, but not weight; this lightweight formula lives up to the task. “It leaves the hair feeling velvety, not heavy, which is exactly what gray hair needs,” he says. Infused with flaxseed extract (a.k.a. semi di lino) and fatty acids, it delivers softness, shine, and renewed manageability.

Best Preventative Treatment: Iles Formula Grey Delay Booster

Image may contain: Bottle, and First Aid

    Iles Formula

    Grey Delay Booster

    $95

    Amazon

    $95

    Bloomingdale's

Why it’s worth it: With a name like Grey Delay, it’s pretty clear what this little bottle is aiming for: more time before those silver strands start showing up. The Iles Formula Grey Delay Booster is a lightweight scalp serum that helps slow the graying process by supporting melanin production at the root. It’s powered by two proprietary blends: Silverfree, a peptide complex that helps “re-educate” hair follicles to reduce gray formation, and MelanoGray, which encourages pigment production and helps combat oxidative stress.

“It’s harder to evaluate since the key actives are proprietary,” says Dr. Ibrahim, “but ingredients like songyi mushroom (tricholoma matsutake) and Sichuan pepper have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which could help buffer oxidative stress in the follicle—a big factor in graying.” He also notes that “acetyl tyrosine this formula might support melanin synthesis under the right conditions,” and that the idea of delaying gray “makes some sense, especially if it’s used preventively rather than as a reversal treatment.” The formula is fragrance-free, gentle enough for daily use, and requires no rinsing.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have gray hair?

The development of gray hair is a normal part of aging, caused by the slowing of the body's melanin production. "Melanocytes in the hair follicle produce pigment during the growth phase of the hair," Daniel Belkin, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York, previously told Allure. "They transfer these packets of pigment into the cells that ultimately become the hair shaft." With hair growth over time, however, the melanocytes produce less and less pigment, leading to grays. "One day they decide not to show up for work anymore— consider it retirement," adds Mona Gohara, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Hamden, Connecticut.

According to the Department of Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, the first gray hairs typically pop up between the ages of 34 and 44, but that doesn't mean they can't appear earlier. Genetic predisposition to grays may be at play, but you may have heard stress is a leading cause of early graying.

"It is unclear whether emotional stress is truly associated with graying of the hair," Joshua Zeichner, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and director of cosmetic and clinical research at the Mount Sinai Department of Dermatology in New York City, previously explained to Allure. "We know that stress can have physical effects, interfering with wound healing and promoting inflammation. We don't know how significant an impact it has on hair color, but I would not be surprised if one day a definite association is found." Hadley King, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, previously explained that lifestyle elements like anemia, smoking, low vitamin B, untreated thyroid illness, and poor nutrition can also contribute to premature graying.

    Can I reverse gray hair?

Color-reversing gray hair treatments are most likely to be effective the earlier you begin using them and are thought to work best on grays related to stress. Ralf Paus, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at the University of Miami, participated in a 2021 gray-reversing related study, about which he told Scientific American, "…there is a window of opportunity during which graying is probably much more reversible than had been thought for a long time."

Still, dermatologists and trichologists have yet to perfect the treatment and its delivery into follicles, and the jury is out on efficacy. "If you're applying something topically, like in a shampoo, it's much harder than you think for that to penetrate through to the skin, right down to the root of the hair, where it needs to be," James O'Sullivan, PhD, a postdoctoral research associate in developmental biology and cell metabolism, previously told Allure. "So there's a bit of a dilemma about delivery and how to get stuff all the way down there." Rebecca Marcus, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Dallas, Texas, added, "The depth of penetration depends on the molecular size and weight of the active ingredient."

That being said, until science develops a method to reverse gray hair, Dr. Gohara explains, the only surefire way to eliminate grays 100% is with hair dye.

How should I choose a gray hair treatment?

Your choice of gray hair treatment depends on the concerns you're looking to address and the level of gray or white hair you currently have. In any case, because dry hair and gray hair can go hand in hand, a product that moisturizes hair from roots to ends is essential, colorist Kylie Williard Fritas previously told Allure. "Gray hair tends to be more on the dry side which happens generally as we age and our body starts to lose moisture. That's why we recommend using highly moisturizing conditioners and styling products to help prevent dryness and dull, frizzy hair texture," added New York City-based hair colorist Clara Purvis. "Additionally, regular oil treatments and hair masks are great ways to increase moisture."

Dr. Gohara reminds readers to focus on prevention rather than reversal. “Choose a treatment knowing that you may get slowing of gray coming in at the roots, but nothing that will permanently get rid of those grays,” she explains.

How we test and review products

We always enlist a range of testers for our makeup vertical, but hair-care products and tools are another story. While there are certainly products that can be used across different hair textures, lengths, curl patterns, thicknesses, colors (natural and unnatural), and needs, hair products are often created with specific consumers in mind. Many are created in order to address a concern (dandruff, breakage, brittleness) or to work most effectively for a specific hair type (4C curls, wavy hair, gray hair). You wouldn't want to pick up a purple shampoo that's only been reviewed by someone with, say, auburn hair, or a diffuser that's never been tested by anyone with curls—right?

For our review of the best gray hair treatments, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, dermatologists, researchers, and hair colorists—who all have experience with treating gray hair. Testers considered performance across four primary categories: efficacy, texture and experience, fragrance, and packaging. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

Why it's worth it: As we age, our skin changes—we lose elasticity and hydration, gain a bit more texture, and those fine lines start to show up. Chanel Ultra Le Teint Compact Foundation nails the trifecta of coverage, comfort, and elegance, all while keeping up beautifully with those shifts. The ultra-fine, silky formula glides on effortlessly, blurring lines and evening tone without clinging to dry spots or settling into creases. Its light-diffusing complex adds a natural luminosity, while absorbent powders leave a polished, matte (but never dull) finish. Amino-acid-coated pigments and squalane lend lightweight, lasting coverage that feels breathable and refined. “It gives good coverage that’s easy to control. The key is not to apply it all evenly throughout the face as if you’re painting a wall,” says New York City-based makeup artist Nick Barose.

Why it’s worth it: Fine lines often bring their plus-one: uneven texture. Luckily, this powder foundation knows exactly how to smooth things over. Bobbi Brown Skin Weightless Powder Foundation “goes on silky smooth and gives buildable coverage while finishing skin with a natural glow,” says Harvey. A trio of light-diffusing powders (talc, synthetic fluorphlogopite, and boron nitride) blurs pores and rough spots, while dimethicone and squalane add a cushiony, soft finish that makes skin feel hydrated and comfortable. Antioxidant-rich apricot, apple, and rosemary extracts nourish the skin while keeping the formula featherlight and breathable, so your coverage never feels piled on.

With 24-hour oil control, a matte finish, and a non-comedogenic formula, it’s a go-to for acne-prone or oily skin (because even mature complexions can still battle shine due to menopause-related skin changes). What are the benefits of powder foundation for mature skin?

For starters, powder foundations are less messy than their liquid counterparts—and you can get a customized, long-wear coverage in a single step instead of having to use both liquid foundation and powder, says Barose, who counts Kim Cattrall and Angela Bassett among his clients. (That said, you can always layer a powder over a liquid or cream foundation, where it'll serve as an impromptu setting powder to help makeup last all day.) And, unlike a liquid foundation, powder foundations are often less irritating since "it sits on the surface of the skin and doesn't penetrate it as easily," says Los Angeles-based makeup artist Robin Black, "It's also great for humid weather and oily skin types."

Remember, menopausal acne is no small thing, so a non-clogging, lightweight foundation is essential for mature skin. "The biggest thing about menopause is that estrogen levels start to drop so you have this unopposed testosterone influence on your skin, and that manifests in many ways," Mona Gohara, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Hamden, Connecticut previously told Allure. “That creates some of the things we see, like hair thinning, hair loss, facial hair, and even some acne breakouts.”

How do I choose the best powder foundation for mature skin?

While powders haven't always been Black's first choice for mature skin (which can trend dry), he explains that some new formulas contain beneficial, hydrating ingredients and fine texture. "The more silky the powder, the better it will work on mature skin." Black is also a fan of hybrid formulas that transform into a powder finish, as these also tend to work better on mature skin than traditional powders. So, look for powder foundations that tout hydrating ingredients.

Ideally, you should swatch the formula on your skin to get an idea of the finish. "Look for a formula that's not completely matte," says Barose. "It should reflect light a bit so you get that healthy, luminous glow along with the coverage."

What's the best way to apply powder foundation on mature skin?

Applying foundation to mature skin, whatever the formula, should revolve around one thing: moisture. "Start by prepping your skin with a heavy moisturizer and allow it to sit for at least 10 minutes," says Black; this method allows the moisture to sink in before applying primer and prevents pilling. Black recommends looking for a primer for mature skin with a semi-matte finish.

Next up is concealer. Since these are typically liquids or creams, they should be applied before any powder. Once you get to your powder foundation, "skip the brush and reach for a traditional makeup puff or a dense, angled sponge," says Black, who adds that dampening the sponge first will increase the coverage. (Using a dry sponge, on the other hand, will scale down the coverage.) Finally, "concentrate the powder on the planes of the face, avoiding the cakey creases around the nostrils, nasolabial folds, under eyes, and anyplace else where you can see more dramatic texture, dry skin, or wrinkles," she says.

When it comes time for touch-ups, don't always reach for the compact, according to Barose. Regular reapplication can make the powder too thick. "Instead, opt for blotting paper to avoid powder build-up," he says.

How do you avoid powder foundation settling into wrinkles?

Proper prep—a.k.a. moisturizing and then following with a makeup primer—will go a long way to smoothing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Then, once you’ve finished applying your powder foundation, apply a hydrating mist.

How we test and review products

Before reviewing any makeup, we ask questions about a number of factors: What ingredients are in it? Does the brand offer a wide shade range inclusive of consumers with all skin tones and undertones? Is it safe for readers who have sensitive skin or wear contact lenses? Is it on the affordable side or more of a splurge? Is its packaging consciously designed or needlessly wasteful?

For our review of the best powder foundations for mature skin, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and makeup artists to review the products. This ensures our testing base spans different skin tones, genders, and dermatological conditions. We considered each product’s performance across four primary categories: ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and inclusivity. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we’ve solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

I didn't want to put pressure on Vanessa Hudgens—she's a little busy being pregnant with her second child, after all—but when we got halfway through October without any major spooky-season beauty moments, I started to worry. Is the Halloween Queen no longer feeling the spirit? So imagine my relief when her nail artist finally gave us a look at the witchy manicure the actor and entrepreneur will be wearing as we creep toward October 31.

Zola Ganzorigt, Hudgens's go-to nail tech, shared a video of what I've come to call the Hudgens Sleeve Hold—she's nothing if not consistent with how she models her manicures—and it's serving some serious dark magic.

The long, oval nails are painted mostly black, with a barely-there iridescent shade above each cuticle. On top of the black polish are tapering silver dots, and each ring finger has a bonus accent of a silver crescent moon.

Ganzorigt, who calls the negative-space look a “moon French,” tells Allure that she used OPI Black Onyx—a true Halloween classic—for the black base. Any metallic silver nail polish will do for dots and moon; we happen to love Le Mini Macaron's Silver Glow. And for that curve above the cuticle, you can try the sheer, pearly Olive & June Frosted Gloss.

“It's really simple, chic, yet Halloween-y," Ganzorigt tells Allure, and I couldn't agree more—though I don't think it's simple enough for me to recreate on my own, hence the appointment I just made at the nail salon. And hopefully—especially now that Vanessa Hudgens has provided the perfect inspiration—I won't be the only one there getting my nails ready for Halloween.

You’ve probably heard of radiofrequency (RF) microneedling. You may even know it’s supposed to tighten skin. But what exactly, is it? As the name says, the treatment combines microneedling— which studies have shown can help mitigate the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, and uneven texture—with heat. To what end? "It can effectively reduce the prominence of fine lines, improve the evenness of skin tone, and offer some skin tightening,” says Darren Smith, MD, FACS, a board-certified plastic surgeon in New York City.

Ahead, Dr. Smith and other skin experts explain everything you need to know about the treatment, including how it works, where you should set expectations, and how much it hurts.

What is RF microneedling, and what are the benefits?

Age, sun exposure, and habits like smoking can cause the breakdown of collagen and elastin, but board-certified dermatologist Arianne Shadi Kourosh, MD, MPH, says treatments like RF microneedling can help restore some firmness to the skin.

Regular microneedling involves making micro-injuries to the skin to trigger a wound-healing response that promotes collagen production. RF microneedling combines this treatment with radiofrequency energy, “to heat the underlying tissue, stimulating even more collagen production, as well as elastin and hyaluronic acid,” Dr. Kourosh says. “It also has a tightening effect on the skin.”

Your skin tone or skin type doesn’t have an impact on whether or not you’re a candidate for the treatment. Dr. Smith says that those with mild to moderate skin tone and texture concerns (such as slight sagging or minor discoloration) who don't need the power of deeper laser treatments (like Fraxel) are great candidates. RF microneedling won't address significant skin laxity or serious sun damage.

    RF Microneedling Has Many Names

There are a number of RF microneedling devices out there, and the differences between them are, in part, just differences in their marketing budgets and ad campaigns. They all use the same core technology, but “they are slightly nuanced in how deeply the needles penetrate the skin,” says Mona Gohara, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Dermatology Physicians of Connecticut. She goes on to explain that deeper penetration can result in increased collagen production. Below, some of the most popular brands:

    Secret RF

Shereene Idriss, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, offers Secret RF in her office to patients with darker skin tones who are especially susceptible to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from the microneedling part of the treatment. Secret RF “has been shown in studies to have less risk of post-procedure hyperpigmentation when compared to other RF microneedling devices,” she says.

    Morpheus8

Dr. Idriss also offers Morpheus8 at her practice. Morpheus8 is an RF microneedling device that “can treat up to 8mm deep into the skin, while other RF microneedling devices typically can only treat up to 3mm deep, which makes it ideal for melting fat,” Dr. Idriss says.

    Genius

The Genius device has 49 needles per tip, compared to 24 on other devices. “The primary benefit of more needles is that the practitioner can treat a larger surface area with each pulse, thereby increasing the speed of treatment and decreasing the duration of each session,” says Jina Kim, senior vice president of global marketing of Lutronic, the aesthetic device company behind Genius.

In Dr. Idriss’s opinion, having more needles on your applicator “isn’t always a good thing, due to over-delivery of energy which poses a risk of hyperpigmentation.” Kim explains that Genius’s technology ensures the delivery of a precise dose of RF energy with each pulse because it is measured and modulated in real time with a proprietary monitoring feature: “The high-torque motor in the Genius handpiece ensures that each needle is consistently inserted to the proper depth, maximizing consistency and outstanding outcomes.”

    Vivace and Vivace Ultra

Vivace and Vivace Ultra received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance in October 2022. While there is no clinically significant difference between the radiofrequency heat used by Vivace and other RF devices, Dr. Idriss says that Vivace adds LED light therapy to the treatment. Its red LED light has anti-inflammatory properties and plumping and smoothing effects, while its blue LED light targets acne.

Of the two, Vivace Ultra provides a more precise application of RF energy because it is equipped with ultrasound imaging and mapping. This provides the practitioner with visuals of the skin’s dermis, epidermis, and tissue layers—a view that is unique to the device. “Everyone’s skin is different, meaning the quality and thickness differ from person to person, based on age, the individual’s anatomy, and other factors,” says Dr. Idriss. “With visual mapping, we can determine what needle depth will penetrate into the dermis, which is where you want all microneedling devices to reach if you want to build collagen.” Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. has previously explained to Allure that this ultrasound feature is especially helpful in treating darker skin tones: “We can deliver the energy deeper in the skin while minimizing trauma to the epidermis [that can cause hyperpigmentation].”

But Jessica Weiser, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Columbia University, suggests that all patients manage expectations when it comes to any of these devices. The hype may not always match the reality. “Each device allows the operator to select the amount of energy delivered and the depth of needle penetration,” she says. "But I saw data from a skin pathologist who did a private set of studies and found that many of these devices are not penetrating to the depth selected or delivering the energy selected. Some devices create a zone of destruction in the dermis, but do not deliver enough heat to cause tissue coagulation." And without tissue coagulation, “there is an empty hole under the skin that slowly fills in but doesn’t tighten or stimulate collagen as robustly.” Dr. Weiser says that, based on the data she's seen, Secret RF and Genius are more accurate in what they deliver compared to other RF microneedling devices.

What can I expect at an RF microneedling appointment?

    The preparation

First, the skin is cleansed to prevent infection. Then a topical anesthetic is applied and left on the skin for an hour to help reduce pain. Dr. Kourush says that if someone doesn't want to wait an hour for the numbing cream to be absorbed into the skin, a local anesthetic such as lidocaine might be injected instead.

    The procedure

The head of an RF microneedling applicator—which is usually about the size of a postage stamp—uses micropins to poke tiny holes in the skin surface, says Dr. Gohara. The tips of the needles also release radiofrequency waves into the openings to heat the surrounding tissue. It can take about 30 minutes to stamp the applicator across the entire face.

What are the risks associated with RF microneedling?

Dr. Kourosh says there’s a risk of hyperpigmentation and scarring if the treatment is not done correctly. There’s also a risk of facial fat loss and infection. But “if the after-care instructions are followed, the risk of infection is low,” Dr. Gohara says.

On October 15, 2025, the FDA issued a safety communication regarding RF microneedling. While its evaluation is “ongoing,” the agency has received reports of “serious complications (adverse events) including burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement, and nerve damage, and the need for surgical repair or medical intervention to treat injuries.” The FDA says it will continue to monitor reports, work with device manufacturers to help “identify mitigation strategies as appropriate,” and release updates as they become available.

Because of the potentially serious risks involved, the experts we spoke to all said you should only see a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon for RF microneedling, as these professionals are also trained to deal with complications. You can go to certificationmatters.org to see if a doctor is certified by the appropriate board.

    The Pain Factor

The experts we spoke with say RF microneedling can be uncomfortable even with numbing cream, but there are a few steps taken during the procedure to help you feel more at ease. In addition to numbing cream, Dr. Smith offers patients nitrous oxide (a.k.a. laughing gas) for added comfort. "Without this approach, RF microneedling can feel like a combination of sharp pokes and electric zaps," he explains.

Dr. Idriss adds that patients have described RF microneedling as rubber band snaps all over the face, with the most sensitive and painful areas being around the eyes and upper lip. "Pain is very subjective," she says. "So it's a bit difficult to anticipate exactly what it will feel like from person to person."

Angela Trakoshis, a former Allure editor, underwent one Morpheus8 session and had a unique experience. “Morpheus8 didn’t hurt at all,” she said. She did, however, endure a bout of painful sunburn after her treatment, despite applying and reapplying sunscreen.

What is recovery like for RF microneedling?

Recovery varies from person to person, but Dr. Kourosh says that most people will experience mild warmth and soreness for the first 24 to 48 hours. You’ll likely be red immediately after your treatment (so perhaps put any errands you have on hold), but Dr. Idriss says that the skin should start to calm down over the next 24 hours. Some people might see areas of bleeding, swelling, and bruising, which can last for up to a week. Most people feel comfortable going back to work the next day with no more than a little makeup. (Trakoshis says her skin felt normal shortly after her Morpheus8 treatment, but she experienced a sunburn weeks later despite following her doctor’s recommendations.)

"When recovering from RF microneedling, you should be extremely gentle with your skin as you have tiny, open wounds on your skin," Dr. Idriss says. "I tell my patients no skin care for 48 hours and [then they can use] gentle skin care for the week following." That means just the basics: cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. And then another layer of sunscreen. It’s imperative that you apply SPF 30 to minimize the chances of post-procedure hyperpigmentation. You should be especially serious about reapplying every two hours for the first week, says Dr. Gohara.

As for what to completely avoid, Dr. Idriss recommends steering clear of anything with fragrance and anything formulated with an exfoliating acid, such as alpha hydroxy (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). She says you'll also want to press pause on your retinols and retinoids until your skin is completely healed, which can take up to a full week. And even when using SPF, she says you'll want to avoid being out in the sun for a few days following treatment.

You can see improvements in your skin after a few days, but it can take two to three weeks for full results. To see optimal results, Dr. Gohara suggests returning one to two more times. The doctors we spoke to said that just one treatment is often enough to help slightly firm the skin, but they will do up to three on patients who are looking to alleviate lines and wrinkles, mild to moderate laxity, and crepiness.

How much does RF microneedling cost?

Dr. Smith says you can expect it to cost anywhere from $1,000 to $1,200 per treatment, but, of course, pricing varies. Dr. Kourosh says that the price depends on where you live and the credentials of the professional administering the treatment.

Here’s the thing: RF microneedling is something you don't want just anyone performing on your skin. "When it comes to your body, your health, and your cosmetic results, it's safer to invest in someone with the [highest level] of credentials over a cheap deal,” says Dr. Kourosh. After all, we are talking about heated needles that are being inserted into your face.
